Tree with links to space planted at Pymatuning Valley High School | News | Space

ANDOVER TOWNSHIP — The tree arrived last week in a cardboard box at Pymatuning Valley High School Principal Mark Mollohan’s office.

The sweet-gum tree came from seeds that flew in a 2022 space mission around the moon on the Artemis, said Shawn Marcin, who applied for the tree. His application was chosen from 1,300 applicants.

Marcin said he and his daughter Sophia, a freshman, enjoy watching space launches and when he saw the National Aeronautic and Space Administration information on how to apply for the tree, he did.

“I am very excited. When he told me, I didn’t believe it,” Sophia Marcin said.

Shawn Marcin said he didn’t think the likelihood of being chose was high but followed through on the idea anyway.

Sophia Marcin said most of their space experience has been online but she said they did get to see a huge NASA transport plane.

Shawn Marcin initiated the application process in the fall of 2023 and was notified of the decision several weeks ago.

Pymatuning Valley maintenance worker Jake Miller opened the cardboard box and the family helped remove the tree and eventually placed it in a pre-dug hole.
