Singapore Changi Airport’s T5 development begins 2025 | Airlines

The Singapore Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong, says that Changi International Airport’s (SIN) long-expected Terminal 5 mass development will begin next year.

At a dinner marking the 40th anniversary of the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) on September 6, 2024, Prime Minister Wong said the country can’t “rest on our laurels” as competitor nations expand their airport infrastructure.

“Some have announced plans for mega airports that can handle more than 100 million passengers a year. So, they are narrowing the gap with Singapore,” Prime Minister Wong said, according to the Strait Times.

Prime Minister Wong added: “We will break ground for the construction of T5 in the first half of next year.”

The new terminal is expected to serve 50 million passengers, which is more than Terminals 1 and 3 combined.

Progress on Terminal 5’s development ground to a halt as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, but with newly announced efforts to complete the project it is expected to be finished around the mid-2030s.

Singapore Changi Airport has dominated as the world’s best airport for several years, although in 2024 Skytrax awarded the title to Doha’s Hamad International Airport (DOH).

SIN handled 16.5 million passenger movements during the second quarter of this year (April to June 2024), an increase of 13.4% when compared to 2023.
