Miami, US, Mar 3 (EFE).- NASA and Space X successfully launched four astronauts, three Americans and a Russian, to the International Space Station (ISS) from Kennedy Space Center in Florida in their eighth crew rotation mission to the station.

Following the launch at 10:53 pm on Sunday, the Space X Dragon spacecraft, carrying the astronauts, on the Falcon 9 rocket reached the orbit and is expected to dock at the station at about 3 am on Tuesday.

“A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket propelled the Dragon spacecraft into orbit carrying NASA astronauts Matthew Dominick, Michael Barratt, and Jeanette Epps, along with Roscosmos cosmonaut Alexander Grebenkin, for a science expedition aboard the orbital laboratory,” NASA said in a statement.

The mission, named Crew-8, is part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program (CCP), which aims for reliable and cost-effective human transportation to and from the ISS through a partnership with American private industry.

“Crew-8 is the eighth crew rotation mission of SpaceX’s human space transportation system and its ninth flight with astronauts (…) to the space station through CCP,” the agency said.

The four astronauts will join the seven members already in the station and will remain there for about six months.

“For a short time, the number of crew aboard the space station will increase to 11,” until four other astronauts from the previous Crew-7 mission would return to Earth in the coming few days.

The astronauts will conduct more than 200 science experiments and technology demonstrations during their mission, including studying brain organoids, shifts in body fluids during spaceflight, and the effects of UV radiation and microgravity on plant growth.

NASA and Space X have carried several crewed missions to space since 2020, when their first mission, Demo-2, took astronauts from the US to the station, a first since the conclusion of the agency’s human spaceflight program…
